3The End times continues, with the fate of the Elves
By Rob C
As always beware, there be spoilers in this reviewThe End Times, Warhammer's major event of the last few years, continue on, but now the focus moves from the Old World and the race of man, to the various Elven races and the final battle for Ulthuan, the birthplace of the Elven peopleTo give some basic background information for those who do not know, many thousands of years ago there was a civil war between the forces of Malekith, the son of the first Phoenix King Aenerion, who had been passed over for the crown and the forces of the lawfully elected Phoenix King Caledor. The war was started by acts of betrayal by Malekith, first poisoning the Phoenix King Bel Shanaar and then murdering the various princes of the realm during a conference to decide a new King. The civil war that followed was bloody and long, but eventually Malekith's armies were defeated and in an act of desperation he attempted to unlock the great magical vortex which lessened the magically energies in the world and contained the forces of Chaos. He was unsuccessful and Ulthuan was devastated with large aries of the island continent sinking beneath the ocean. Malekith and his surviving followers fled and founded a new kingdonw in the North west, Naggaroth and have spent the following Millennia trying to conquer Ulthuan.(This story is told excellently in the Time of legends trilogy by Gav Thorpe, The Sundering)The story is told from Malekith's perspective as he makes the decision on an all or nothing gambit, throwing the entire forces of the Dark Elves (as they are known to mankind) abandoning Naggaroth. Either they will be successful in the attempt, or they will be wiped out. The novel then takes us through the invasion, with acts of betrayal once again and then the surprise twist. Tyrion, the great hero of the High elves draws the dread sword of Khaine, Elven god of Murder, the most deadly weapon ever created and a weapon that damns any that wields it, corrupting all in it's presence. Malekith becomes the new Phoenix King by passing the great test of standing in the holy fire of Asuryan, chief Elven god without any magical protection, which he had tried to do before and failed in spectacular fashion. The war between the two continues without direct confrontation between the two, until the last climatic battle as Teclis, brother of Tyrion, greatest mage of the age and prime architect of the current events, attempts with Malekith's support to unlock the great magical vortex and free the Winds of magic in order to deal with the End Times. This to me is the strongest book so far in the End Times series (though that's not saying much to be honest).. It helps that Gav Thorpe is writing this, given that he did write the start of the Sundering tale many years ago. The narrative is good, with a mixture of what is happening currently then flash backs to earlier events (some of which are lifted word for word from other books) and the action scenes in the novel are well paced and written well in this. The book has less logical gaps in it then the other End Times books, so there are fewer moments where you are left scratching your head as the power of plot forces events to happen, though there are some (The Wood Elves end up fighting in this, arriving to Ulthuan through World Roots, able to travel instantly to places). However the book is way too short for the End of the Elves, It needed at least another 150 pages to expand upon the fate of some of the character's whose fate was decided off screen and add more depth to other scenes. In short, this is an okay book, it could have been better if the author had been given more pages to work with, but there were a lot of good ideas here and the story is readable.

Well written and very enjoyable. Can't wait for the next chapter. I now care about what happens to the elves.
